Flash Fiction. What? And Stuff…

Me? Flashing?

I just posted a little bit more Lauradale up on the top menu…a journal part.  And not sure how I’ll incorporate these parts.  But that’s not the main thing on my mind tonight….

The main thing on my mind tonight is this thing I just heard about, this afternoon, called Flash Fiction.  What in the world?  I love the entire idea of it!  Wait…let me see if I can find some sort of simple definition.  Of course, the definition may be longer than a piece of flash fiction:

“In brief, flash fiction is a short form of storytelling. Defining it by the number of words or sentences or even pages required to tell a story, however, is impossible, for it differs from writer to writer, editor to editor. Some purists insist that it is a complete story told in less than 75 words; others claim 100 should be the maximum. For less-rigid flashers, anything under 1,000 words can be considered flash-worthy. And there are even a few who stretch their limits to 1,500 words.”  (from: http://www.writing-world.com/fiction/flash.shtml)

Where have I been living for the past probably decade?  I’ve never heard this term before.  There’s so many things that are ‘flash’ these days .  So, technically, my two works in progress – Flirting With The Moon and also Lauradale – are Flash Fiction pieces parts I’m trying to fit together.  I don’t like the sounds of that, though.  Even if it is Flash Fiction, it will be woven together somehow.  That’s my ultimate goal.

On the other hand, I really like this idea of flash fiction.  I ask myself, though, isn’t this just another form of free form poetry in prose form?  Don’t poems have plots and turns and outcomes?  So I’m thinking…this is right up my alley.  I might be able to do something with this.  Flash Fiction pieces are merely short short short and shorter stories in a way short development time/word frame:  Setting, plot, conflict, character, point of view, theme…just all done in a very few words.  I would think 1500 words would be a page or two of prose.  Oh what a lovely challenge!  That is exactly what I want to accomplish.  I must go back now, however, and see…is each piece actually a stand alone story?  OMG…of course they d on’t.  But they soon will 😛

I can’t believe I’ve been writing Flash Fiction all these years.  I thought it was prose.  Everyday something taps you on the shoulder and introduces a newness to life.  I’m very excited to learn of this…

I am going to enter a flash fiction contest.  I have about a month to prepare and submit something.  I will probably post my baby steps here.  Lucky you 😛
