I’ll Be Right Back

Samantha looked out the hotel window. The crowded street, below,  led to the beach and boardwalk and crashing ocean waves of winter.

“Honey?” She walked over to the bed where her husband sat and kissed his forehead. “I’m going to run downstairs and get something from the safe.”

“Our reservation is for 8PM. You’re still in your jeans and sweat shirt.”

“It’s not even six ,” Samantha said tiredly. “I’m going to run downstairs for a ring I want to wear this evening. I’ll be right back.”

It shouldn’t be so easy to just disappear like that, but it is.

  1. Ellespeth,
Well written. I used to dream of disappearing in this manner. However, it used to be a lot easier than it is today. Security cameras and face-recognition software make it a lot more difficult to disappear into the crowd than it used to be. Sometimes I long for the old days . . .

    All my best,

  2. Ellespeth, She seems to have brought expensive jewelry with her she could pawn or sell so it was probably planned. I hope if she chose to leave she left her husband enough money to get back home. Good mystery. It would make a great hook for a longer story. Well written as usual. 🙂 — Susan

  3. Dear Ellespeth,

One of the best last lines I’ve ever read in a Friday Fictioneers story. It opened up both ends of her story for examination and speculation. I found myself taken aback, wondering. Still am and happy to have read this tale.

    Aloha,

Actually…I carried this photo with me on my walk to the market. As I turned a corner, I thought: a person could literally just disappear on a walk to the market.
Your comment is such an encouragement for me…I want to move beyond poetry but still be mysteriously lyrical. Friday Fictioneers is allowing me this outlet.
