I’ll Be Right Back
Samantha looked out the hotel window. The crowded street, below, led to the beach and boardwalk and crashing ocean waves of winter.
“Honey?” She walked over to the bed where her husband sat and kissed his forehead. “I’m going to run downstairs and get something from the safe.”
“Our reservation is for 8PM. You’re still in your jeans and sweat shirt.”
“It’s not even six ,” Samantha said tiredly. “I’m going to run downstairs for a ring I want to wear this evening. I’ll be right back.”
It shouldn’t be so easy to just disappear like that, but it is.

A mystery. Did she vanish or was she ‘vanished’? She did kiss her husband fondly as she left, so I’m thinking foul play is more likely. This is grippingly written.

Oh, mysterious! Does she have something up her sleeve? Does she lead a double life? Maybe she just wants a bit of space. Somehow, I think she has some other plans. Good one!

I don’t know what’s going on either! I spooked myself…

Ellespeth,
Well written. I used to dream of disappearing in this manner. However, it used to be a lot easier than it is today. Security cameras and face-recognition software make it a lot more difficult to disappear into the crowd than it used to be. Sometimes I long for the old days . . .
All my best,

Then you know the feeling. And eww to all that high tech stuff…can’t a person just vanish these days?

Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. I hope it’s a doable plan for her. Well written.

Me too! It’s possible, though, that she was snatched. Life’s odd that way. Miserable and more miserable 😛
Thanks for reading and liking this piece.

Ellespeth, She seems to have brought expensive jewelry with her she could pawn or sell so it was probably planned. I hope if she chose to leave she left her husband enough money to get back home. Good mystery. It would make a great hook for a longer story. Well written as usual. 🙂 — Susan

Yes. Sigh. No one will ever be certain just what happened to Samantha. I think, though, her husband made it home and survived quite nicely. Your comment has me smiling…

Dear Ellespeth,
Sounds like she has a plan. It would be easy to disappear in the crowd. Nicely played.

Dear Ellespeth,
One of the best last lines I’ve ever read in a Friday Fictioneers story. It opened up both ends of her story for examination and speculation. I found myself taken aback, wondering. Still am and happy to have read this tale.

Actually…I carried this photo with me on my walk to the market. As I turned a corner, I thought: a person could literally just disappear on a walk to the market.
Your comment is such an encouragement for me…I want to move beyond poetry but still be mysteriously lyrical. Friday Fictioneers is allowing me this outlet.

Since the choice seems to be she went of her own volition or was snatched, I’ll choose the former. Not much comfort to her husband either way.

That’s a bit creepy. Did she leave of her own volition or did someone snatch her? Good stuff!

I hope she wasn’t snatched – just disappeared into the crowd and vanished.
