Someone lit a bonfire near the lake. Someone roasted marshmallows. The library reflected golden upon the water and cheerful dulcimer music seemed to lighten the air. Polly and her friend, Irene, were closing up their booth at the Renaissance Fair.
“I think I’ll leave the fairy lights on until after the cook-out,” Polly whispered.
“Sounds like a plan.”
Polly’s breath caught somewhere between in and out. She spun around. There wasn’t anybody there.
“Can’t you just go away?” she pleaded. The air became heavy with the memory of his voice.
“Who are you talking to?” Irene asked.
“Just fireflies.”

Ellespeth, Sounds like a rather festival-loving spirit. I can see where it might get tiresome though after a while. Well written story. I love the snowy scene at the top of your blog. 🙂 — Susan

Hi Susan ~ He’s definitely an agreeable sort 🙂 But even that can become tiresome.
Ah! The snowy scene 🙂 I like photographs of snow but not real snow. This is some something I found on the web.
Sorry for this delayed response…A book shelf had the nerve to poke me in the eye late last week. Hope all is well and that your husband continues to heal.

Nicely written. Is it a ghost or a memory (is there a difference?) – well done.

Ooh. You could cut the air with a knife. She obviously doesn’t want him around.

I think Polly pretty much would like this spirit to find its resting place. Some never do and I’m sure it gets annoying 😛

I hope he’s friendly or she could be in trouble. I like how you’ve built the atmosphere here.

He’s as harmless as a firefly 🙂

Haunting.. the mood seems to be right to have a ghost breathing beside you (do they breathe or just sound like they are doing it?)

Nah. Ghosts don’t breathe. They like to talk, though.

Dear Ellespeth,
I like the ethereal quality of this. Nothing like a Renaissance festival to bring out the magic. Nice one.

It was right about here – in my Friday Fictioneer life – that I rammed my left eye into a wooden packing crate! Slowly healing…
Thanks for passing by to read this piece, Rochelle. I so wanted to write a fairytale but it just wouldn’t fit 😦 This came close and there are other weeks. I’m glad you enjoyed it.

Right when I saw your photograph, I’d been thinking of putting some fairy lights in mason jars for the holidays. That got me thinking of fireflies. The grassy area of your photo looks about perfect for some sort of fair. So thanks for the photo…
glad you enjoyed this piece.

At first I was disturbed but in the end I felt a sense of peace.

I’m glad…maybe just a restless spirit unwilling to leave.
Hope your Thanksgiving was yummy!
