This post is part of Sunday Photo Fiction. It’s supposed to be about 200 words to do – somehow – with the photo below. This is my first week here. I write poetry and have recently expanded to 100 word fiction pieces. This piece falls somewhat short of 200 words…
“Men used to have rights. Now that’s a fact.” Bernie slammed down his beer mug. A few precious drops of beer sloshed onto the bar.
“Here! Here!” Someone shouted from a corner of the tavern.
“To when men had rights!” Someone else raised up a mug to toast.
“Go on Bernie.” Kate, the barmaid, wiped up the spilled beer. “Tell us what happened next.”
“What happened next is that she got out the bed, butt naked, and said she was leaving me for some nerdy-techie-type. That’s what happened next.” Bernie sucked in some froth. “She didn’t even give me a chance to protest. She just left.”
Kate put a basket of peanuts in front of Bernie. “That’s not right,” she snarled.
“It ain’t,” Bernie agreed. “I had a right to speak my mind.”
“Here! Here!” Someone shouted from a corner of the tavern.
“To when men had rights!” Someone else raised up a mug to toast.

Looks like he’s drowning his sorrows. I wonder if he buying the drinks for that crowd. He can drink all he likes, but she’s still gone. I wonder if she left because he was drowning his sorrows a bit too much. Humorous stuff and well done, Ellespeth. 🙂 — Suzanne
