Time for this week’s Flash Fiction For Aspiring Writers. It begins anew each Wednesday. 100-150 words more or less to do with the photo below (photo changes each week). I’ll put the link to this week’s stories at the end of this piece. Blogs, like this, are such a great gift for writers – and I believe readers, too. Pass on by – click on the froggy at the end of this story.
Very thankful to PJ for hosting this for us. It’s so much appreciated. So exciting to see how this is taking off and attracting more people each week.
I Promise I’ll Forgive You One Day
Sometimes I wonder if you remember, like I do, that afternoon at the park. The world was colored burnt orange and fading green. A flock of mallard ducks guided each other to a swim in the river’s gentle flow. So many innocent yesterday promises. We were going to remember that afternoon forever.
“We don’t have to hate each other before we say good-bye,” I said years later. It was raining and cold. I was standing in the foyer, looking at you through the screened door.
You were standing on the porch looking back at me through the silence.
Sometimes silence is like a vacuum. It just sucks everything out of a person right before some deeper, more peaceful breath prevails; when that ascent to forgiveness seems impossible. What was there left to promise anymore?

Thanks to PJ for our photo.
I felt this story, it felt like the vacuum filled space was surrounding me as I read it, only, it oozed something peaceful. Well done!

Thanks. I’ve gone spinning in that vacuum once or twice myself.

Great imagery of the couple looking through the screen at one another in silence, having nothing left to say to one another. So sad, but beautifully written.

I wish I could have thought of something for him/her to say 😦 That’s how it is sometimes, though.
Thanks for continuing to read and comment on my work. I do appreciate this.

I love the desription of that day at the park – the burnt orange and fading green, and the mallard gliding along the river. You have created the poignance of the failed relationship very well. Silence is like a vacuum … lovely.

I wonder how long the silent treatment has been used in marriages? Or relationships in general? Couples are much more outspoken these days so, hopefully, this isn’t used much.
Glad you liked it and thanks for passing by.

I would like to think that both men and women are more ‘open’ in their relationships now. Unfortunately, I think the silent treatment may still apply in some cultures. I may be wrong on that, though. Thought-provoking, all the same.

You capture the distance that has fallen between the couple really well. I love the final paragraph. 🙂 Well done.

I can feel the sadness and emptiness in the relationship between these two people in this story. It feels forlorn. Wonderful piece of writing Ellspeth!

Thanks, PJ. At least the narrator is willing to forgive – one day.
Great prompt. I look forward to this every week!
