Year of the Empty Nesters – A Poem

Year of the Empty Nesters

Cold
salty Gulf breeze
same as any other year
fireplace ablaze
in the beachfront cottage.
Laughter of younger years
echoing through thin windows
and lace panels
and lives rutted over
and over
into that rich soil of friendship.
All the kids grown
and really gone now
we meet this year
at last
as women
without a nest to hold us.
