Those Juniper Blues

One day, two lovers planted
a  sapling Juniper bush
and
when it had grown
full height and width
they hid their treasure
beneath its scented branches.

Long years later
they returned
and
found their treasure shattered
without arms
begging to be saved.

The woman broke off
a branch of juniper
heavy with berries of blue
and
the man gathered up
pieces of their treasure –
wrapped them in a soft piece of cloth.

Then they went home again
with all that was broken
and
created something beautiful.
The woman smudged
every bit of air around them
with smoke
from the fresh Juniper branch.
The man chanted softly
and opened the door
to bring in a fresh breath.

People say
they’ve sometimes seen the lovers
dancing near the Juniper bush
in the village graveyard.
I believe that’s true
and so
I often dance
near the Juniper bush we’ve planted.

  1. Love the reveal at the end – that you and your lover are the ones that planted the juniper bush! Lovely poem/story, Ellespeth! (A gentle reminder for you to link your story up to the InLinkz Story Board).
