Time again for Flash Fiction for Aspiring Writers. Thanks to PJ for hosting this weekly challenge. please follow little froggy for more stories.
Here is the photo and my story.
The Receptionist
11am used to be an escape time for me each day. That’s when the helicopter touring the Mississippi River – just at the crescent of New Orleans – would pass by the beauty parlor window where I was the receptionist.
Henry, the building’s security man, would lean against my counter. We’d find ourselves wondering about the lives of the people in that red and white helicopter. We’d wonder what we’d do if we had enough money to take a helicopter tour of the Mississippi River.
Eventually, Henry would move his security self to other floors and other receptionists and other fantasies.
That was fine with me. After all, I was the flirty receptionist Henry came home to each day and I was the one who loved Henry.

Thank you, Jade. When I first saw this photograph I said to my husband
“oh my gawd! All I can think about is Donald Trump. I’m not gonna write a story this week!”
Then I thought about it and slept on it and came up with this.

We need more sweet these days – not that I’m on a ‘sweet crusade’ or anything 😛

such a sweet story that made me feel mushy inside. love is sweet when conversation flows between two people.

I think so, too. Just the ordinary ways of everyday conversation is so endearing.
Thank you for reading this piece and for your comment.

Very sweet story. Just like most people, talking and wondering about things, then it’s back to doing their normal things. She talked to a lot of people, but knew where her heart belonged and loved it. 😍

Yes she knew her heart did not belong to the hunky FedEx man 😛

I guess “move his security self to other floors and other receptionists” can be read two ways. I hope he’s only keeping them safe and nothing more 🙂

Henry would do best to just flirt like she does. We don’t take flirting very seriously in New Orleans 😛

Sweet love story except for “wandering Henry.” LOL! At least she knows she is the one he will come home to. Loved this story, Ellespeeth!

Poor Henry – so misunderstood 😛 You have me laughing, PJ! He’s some lucky that the receptionist loves him and doesn’t care that he flirts just as much as she does 🙂

I thought his was a great story, Ellespeth. Great tone throughout, great rhythm to the sentences and a nice snapshot of a real relationship – no hearts and flowers, just reality and acceptance of what your partner’s like.
Really nice take on the prompt

Thank you for this comment, Lynn. Tone and rhythm and reality are important to me. I see these two being happy many years down the line.

My pleasure. I thought it worked really well and just hit on a truth – real love comes with acceptance. Great work

This in interesting take. A part of me wants to tell her that she deserves better, but hey, she’s happy and satisfied with Henry. Who am I to say such a thing to her (or really, anyone who’s experiencing something similar)? So, yes, a thought provoking piece, for sure. And vivid descriptions with lots of feels! Love it

Yes. Feelings can go either way with this one – and who are we to judge when someone is happy in ways that we might not be?
Glad readers took this piece into so many different directions. Thanks for reading and for your comment.

Thank you. I hadn’t a clue where to begin with this until I sat down to write it. When I was a teen, I did summer work at a beauty parlor right on the river…
