When You Brought Me Red Carnations In October – A Poem

When You Brought Me Red Carnations In October

You came home
with a bunch of red carnations.
I thought of March
in New Orleans.
Royal Street.
St. Joseph’s Day.
Old and young men parading about
holding out red carnations
for a kiss.

I put them in a white vase
to symbolize the white carnations
too
given
perhaps
without a kiss in return.
