En Route
We were headed out and onto and into the dream. Our Love Bug was red. Our degrees were still hot off the press. We were going to San Francisco, and we each had one hundred dollars. It was June in Chicago in 1967. I trusted you with my life.
I was lying down in the car, with my head somewhat uncomfortably on your lap, looking at the stars through the front windshield. “What’s the first thing you wanna do when we reach San Francisco, Sal?” I asked.
“Marry you?”
“Besides that.”
“Fuck you?”
We were headed for summer.

Great word picture with this flash fiction. I could picture them perfectly!! To be young and free 🙂

Thank you 🙂 What a great summer to head west – $200 bucks could last a month or more…20 was interesting but I’m saying that about 60-something, too.
I appreciate your comment.

🙂 Thanks MissTiffany. I hope so, too – but then, when it’s all just beginning, how many couples think it won’t work? I’m glad you liked this.

You’re welcome!
Hmmm, I don’t know. I think most couples usually think it will work, and then are surprised when it doesn’t. But there are those that doubt it from the first. Either way, it is was meant to be it will work out!
Cheers,
Tiffany

This was so evocative of the time. ‘Degrees hot off the press’ – wonderful.

“If you’re going to San Francisco, be sure to wear some flowers in your hair.” 🙂 That song popped into my head as soon as I read your story. Nicely done, despite undoubtedly realistic language.

Just before I signed on this evening I was humming that same song. Yes, if I remember correctly, fairly realistic language 😛 Thanks for reading this piece. Glad you liked it.

Dear Ellespeth,
That’s how lovers talk. Good story and very evocative of young love. I couldn’t help but hear Sherriff Brody saying to Quint…”Your gonna need bigger car.”
(And I liked that in both of our stories the destination was summer.)

That’s exactly how lovers talk. Even us 60-something yr olds from the 60’s.
Was that from Jaws? Jaws is bad news, in my family, ever since my brother first saw it and cleared a Gulf Coast beach yelling “Shark!” – when a jelly fish rubbed against his leg.
I’m on my way to begin reading stories and wondering where your characters ended up…

Glad you liked this story. Maybe I’ll put some sort of warning. Is that required? If so I’ll put it just as you’ve worded it.

Actually, Ellespeth, a warning isn’t a bad idea. I used to post the suggestion. There are those who might be offended.
